Presented in Singapore, Alice and the Chinese Princess marks the completion of a long creative journey that began during an art residency held in a printing factory. Over three months, the concept for the book took shape—an illustrated children’s story inspired by the richness of Asian culture.
Research began with visits to local libraries, where I explored Singaporean children’s literature. Fascinated by Peranakan culture and its vivid mix of traditions, I travelled with my family to Malacca, the historical centre of the Peranakan world. There, I discovered stories of a Chinese traveller, a well named after a princess, and the origins of this unique heritage.
The first version of the book was completed during the residency and later refined over two years. It combines imagination, historical research, and illustration to introduce young readers to the layered cultural history of the region.
At the launch—held in a local bookstore dedicated to Asian literature—my daughters, Lisa and Alisa, joined in the celebration, and even the studio gnome made an appearance, as if reminding me that creativity often comes with humour and surprise.
